West Point Grey United Church – Coordinator Intercultural Ministry
The Coordinator of Intercultural Ministry provides leadership with the support of current staff, Minister and congregational volunteers and newcomers to develop a further ‘bridging’ ministry with the wider community and the church to gather for social and spiritual opportunities. The Coordinator of Intercultural Ministry also provides oral interpretation and written translation (English – Mandarin) for worship services, church events and communication as needed. The Coordinator of Intercultural Ministry also seeks to provide additional linguistic support to congregants when needed.

Remuneration & Hours
• Permanent
• 14 hours per week which includes Sunday with flexible hours Tuesday through Friday as agreed to with the Minister
• $27.00 per hour

Position Title: Coordinator of Intercultural Ministry

Position Reports to: Coordinating Minister; Chair of Worship Committee; Chair of Ministry and Personnel Committee

Duties

– provide support for the Intercultural Ministry at West Point Grey United Church.
– meet regularly with the Coordinating Minister for planning of the Intercultural Ministry and other congregational events and activities.
– attend meetings of the Ministry team at West Point Grey United Church, report on current activities involving the Intercultural Ministry and share plans for future events.
– consult and collaborate with the Children’s Ministry Program Coordinator regarding children’s activities and the Music Director where appropriate.
– provide primary leadership with the support of current staff, Minister and congregational volunteers and newcomers in developing a further ‘bridging’ ministry with the wider community and the church to gather for social and spiritual opportunities.
– provide linguistic translation for liturgical services as needed.
– translate materials from English to Mandarin for liturgical services.
– provide oral interpretation and written translation (English-Mandarin) for worship services, church events and communications as needed.
– prepare and send a regular written report to Church council and attend Council meetings as needed.
– initiate and demonstrate leadership in intercultural activities.
– consult with Pastoral Care Committee as needed.

Job specifications

– familiarity of Christianity, the United Church of Canada and its Worship traditions.
– competency in English and Mandarin. Familiarity with another language is an asset.
– competency in language translation from both written and oral
– competency with computer technology
– competency and experience arranging volunteer helpers for activities
– personal insight into challenges about relocating to Canada and becoming a valued member of this faith community and beyond.
– experience working collaboratively with a team
– ability to work effectively with or without supervision
– experience and ability to initiate and develop an inclusive intercultural ministry.
